Extra Credit

All extra credit must be turned in by the beginning of our last class - May 6, 2015. No exceptions. I will allow students to earn up to 40 points of extra credit.


1. For 10 points: Attend a environmentally-themed lecture, hike, or similar event. (Daemen College produces a comprehensive newsletter listing local environmental events. Find it athttp://www.daemen.edu/offices/academicaffairs/econews/Pages/default.aspx)
1.      Take a picture of yourself clearly at the event
2.      Do a one page write-up typed and answer the following questions:
1.      What was the event and where was it located
2.      Explain why this event took place or its purpose
3.      Explain how this event relates to our wilderness course and/or the concepts we’ve covered
4.      Explain 3 environmental ideas you learned at this event
5.      Who put the event on, the leader’s contact information, and any related events they might be putting on in the future

2. For 20 points: Create an audio or video "podcast" – appropriate for posting on the SSC118 blog - demonstrating your understanding of 1 or more of the following. The podcast must be at least 5 minutes long, creative, and entertaining:
  • What Aldo Leopold is all about and why his work was (and is) so damn important
  • Why John Muir is awesome 
  • The return of the wolf to Yellowstone and the resulting trophic cascades
  • Population Ecology vs. Community Ecology vs. Ecosystem Ecology
  • Is there really a debate about Climate Change?
  • The water situation in Charleston, WV and how it relates to shortcomings in our Toxic Substances Control Act.
  • Successes, failures, and ongoing projects of the Endangered Species Act

3. For 20 points, you can also do another of the course exercises listed in the syllabus.
